The complex microenvironment in chronic wounds makes it difficult for the wound to healing, which imposes a great burden on patients. In current treatment methods, patches, coatings, and creams are commonly used, but most of them have poor therapeutic effects and are burdensome, because drug molecules need to overcome the obstruction of the stratum corneum of the skin to reach the site of action, and the biofilm formed by wound scab and bacteria further hinders drug penetration. As a new type of transdermal drug delivery method, microneedles overcome the shortcomings of previous dosage forms, achieve painless drug delivery, physically break through the skin barrier, and effectively deliver drugs to the dermal tissue. In the preparation of microneedles, natural polysaccharides have attracted much attention due(Biocompatibility, Degradability, Non toxicity)to their excellent physicochemical properties. In this review, the types and preparation methods of microneedles are briefly introduced, and the research progress of microneedle systems constructed with different natural polysaccharides as matrix materials in promoting chronic wound repair is discussed in depth. The future application prospects of natural polysaccharide based microneedles are also discussed.
