Zhuang Changgong (1894-1962) was a pioneering figure in organic chemistry research and the founder of organic trace analysis in China. He made significant contributions to organic synthesis, particularly in the synthesis of steroid compounds and the structural study of natural organic compounds, earning him a distinguished reputation within the international organic chemistry community. Furthermore, he championed an innovative spirit in his research endeavors and promoted the academic principle of "prioritizing meaningful pursuits over trivial ones." Guo Moruo, former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, referred to him as a "flagbearer" for China"s chemical community. This article reflects on Mr. Zhuang Changgong"s developmental journey and scientific career, highlights his major achievements and contributions to China"s chemical industry, and distills valuable insights from his perspectives on education, research, family values, and patriotism. |
